A series of seven drawings titled, Hanging by a thread, image a blue nest of sky and water against a burnt landscape. The high horizon line depicts a deep space while at the same time it creates a shallow abstract picture plane. I employ a mixture of expressively applied oil pastel with the graphic marks of pencil and charcoal to capture the viewer’s attention with a minimum of information.
The idea of nesting is the point of departure for this series exploring the metaphoric connotations of a safe place. An urge to nest can be associated with times of war, environmental degradation, fear of bodily injury, economic frailty and the passage of time.
Left unframed, these drawings are mounted on foam core and attached with steel pins allowing the works to float in front of the wall. Oil pastel, colour pencil and graphite on Mylar.
